Founded in the Midst of Civil War

In the year 1863, while a nation tore itself apart, a small congregation gathered beside a country road in rural Johnson County. The Civil War raged across the South. Families grieved. Fields lay untended. Uncertainty hung over every home. And yet, in the middle of all that hardship, Bay Springs Baptist Church was born.

Many have asked why anyone would establish a church in such a turbulent season. The answer, we believe, lies in the nature of faith itself. Hardship has a way of turning our eyes upward. When the world feels unsteady, people reach for something that does not move. For the founders of Bay Springs, that steady ground was God. The very chaos that troubled their days may well have been the reason they built a place to worship, to pray, and to find one another.

The Founders

The story of Bay Springs is, at its heart, a story of people. Founding families such as the Mims and the Foskey households, alongside their faithful neighbors, laid the foundation of this fellowship. They cleared the ground, raised the walls, and opened the doors to all who sought comfort and community.

These were ordinary families doing something quietly extraordinary. They planted a church that would outlast them, trusting that generations they would never meet might one day gather in the same place to sing, to pray, and to grow in faith.

A Legacy of Endurance

Over more than a century and a half, Bay Springs has stood witness to some of the most difficult chapters in our shared history. The congregation has endured:

  • Two World Wars, sending sons and daughters off to serve while keeping the light of prayer burning at home.

  • Natural disasters that tested the resolve of the community and called neighbors to lean on one another.

  • Economic depression, when resources were scarce but faith remained abundant.

  • The passing of many beloved saints, each one leaving a legacy of devotion woven into the fabric of this church.

Through every trial, the members of Bay Springs held fast. Pastors came and went, each shepherding the congregation with care. Families grew, changed, and passed the torch to their children. And in good times and bad, the church remained what it had always been: faithful, gentle, and steadfast in following Christ.

Character Shaped by Faith

What has kept Bay Springs standing for so long is not grand ambition or great fortune. It is character. This is a congregation known for its faithfulness, its kindness, and its quiet devotion to the teachings of Jesus. Members have cared for one another through joy and sorrow alike, offering comfort in loss and celebration in blessing.

That gentle, Christ-centered spirit is the true inheritance of Bay Springs. It has been carried forward, one generation to the next, by people who understood that a church is not merely a building beside a road. It is a living family of believers.
